BIOGRAPHY

 

 

Aleem Dad hails from a region that has experienced disintegration of traditional weltanschauung, which gave meaning to the order of things. He was born in a period where life around him is reduced to heap of broken images by rationalization and market forces. As a result, Aleem feels an ineffable lacuna in his self as well as society. Aleem Dad strives to fill that gap through his work of art.  Although, the process of filling the gap is a Sisyphean struggle, he still holds the conviction that art can provide a new base for the creation of alternative world. But the amnesia of society about poverty of meaning creates angst in him, which manifest in his work of art. Aleem’s work grapples with the existential issues of our times with different mediums with issues that engaged the minds of human beings since time immemorial. In order to interpret issues of contemporary world we need to have a medium that is in consonant with the sensibilities of postmodern age. By doing so he manages to keep his medium immune from shortcomings that ensue from anachronism.His work is an existential scream that enters into consciousness not through ears but through eyes. The conflation of senses awakes our senses from the numbness that results from dedicating our sensing to single task. For instance, Aleem’s work of art compels us to listen through our eyes, comprehend by heart and feel via mind. Thereby, it may be stated that Aleem challenges the limitation imposed by nature through art.

 

Blaise Pascal said ‘‘heart has its own reasons of which reason knows nothing’. Aleem essays to bridge the yawning gap between heart and mind. In ‘eye light’ he depicts four paintings in which an octogenarian woman with a physiognomy revealing mellow wisdom and is holding her hand close to the heart as if she understands through thinking heart not through discourses spawned by the academia. Another painting in the same title illustrates rays spiral out from a core. It conveys the mystical message of amor vincit omnia ‘love conquers all’. Although some of his work appears provocative to the viewer, it hides soft heart in rough shell.Realizing the catastrophes brought about by the reason Aleem spreads rays of love through the eyes of art. There is a bull painted in Mohenjo-dara style in which eye is marked by prominence. Here the Aleem invites our consciousness to get rid of binary opposition of tradition and modernity, primitive versus modern, and revels in the collective wisdom that has been within us in collective unconscious, but suppressed by the tyranny of reason of modern times that thinks in binary opposition.
